Depends on what tubes are in it. Either 811a's or 572b's. I dont know much about these amps but I have owned some Heathkit and Yaesu 572b amps which are high drive amps and that radio you got will be a perfect driver for. From what I gather, the Ameritron 811 could have either tube in it. the 811a or the 572b. They are basically the same tube.

If you are running on am, then I would not use more than the 30 watts pep. If you want to run more drive on am ,then switch to the 572b's, they can take more abuse. Keep in mind those are chinese tubes, and can't take much abuse.

Read the manual, follow their advice, no need to abuse those 811's.
And a couple of things about substituting 572B's for 811's. It can be done, but you won't ever see the performance from those 572B without a few modifications to that amplifier. A 572B and 811 are NOT comparable, they will only fit the same tube socket. The biggest difference between the two is plate voltage, the 572B can have much more than the 811's. One common way of 'bumping' that plate voltage with an AL-811H is by re-wiring the transformer. That's great for the plate voltage, but it also 'bumps' the filament voltage which is definitely NOT great. Several ways of 'curing' that, maybe the best is by use of 'ni-chrome' wire for the filament wiring (don't take that as gospel, about the 'ni-chrome' wire thingy!). You can also count on increasing the cooling! That voltage 'bump' means lots more heat, and the AL-811H is marginal as is. There's more to it than just those aspects, it really isn't something someone not experienced with tube amplifier construction to mess with with out lots of research. - 'Doc |
