now that i got this new MFJ 949E Tuner, i want to start playing with random wire antennas.... anyone have any experience in this?

Probably the best single thing to do/have is a very good ground system. Sorry, ground rods don't fall into that category, but ground radials do. The more the better, and the longer the better. That gives that random wire something to 'work' against. A very good rule of thumb is as much metal in the ground as in the air. After that, try anything you think might work. Maybe a few things that you just 'know' shouldn't work. Sometimes you get surprised! - 'Doc

ive tried to make several but all i ever get is local traffic (truckstop stuff about half a mile away )

If you want to look at the moon, and you got a street light sort of close to that telescope, it's going to 'wash out' part of what you want to see. Right? Same thing with radio signals to some extent. You end up looking at what you can see, or turn off that street light. No, I'm NOT implying what that sounds like!
