Yeah Doc...keeps the bank charged up like an alternator would, which was the intent. The few extra watts are really just an indicator that it's performing it's function.

3500 Average/RMS watts is doing fine for now. I will be replacing my 2 pill driver (2x2879) with a 4x1446 shortly and that should give me somewhere between 4000-4500 which should keep me happy for a while I run the driver on it's own 12 volt source so changing it to a bigger driver will not pull any power from the 16 pill.

I have a 20 amp fuse in the incoming AC line which should provide enough safety. The cooling fan sucking straight through the box from end to end should keep the rectifiers cool which are what need it the most.

Update.. I've had a chance to test more now that I've had this power supply hooked to my battery bank for four or five days and I'm pleased with the results.

When fully charged, my battery bank sits at 19 volts+ (12.5 + 6.5)

When talking on my 16 pill having a normal conversation for 10 or 15 minutes
the battery bank stays at no less than 17.5 volts under modulation.

This is while dead
keying the 16 pill at 1000 watts rocking forward to peaks between 3000 and 3500 RMS/AVG/Bird watts.

Recovery time for the battery bank to 18 volts is negligible. Recovery to fully charged 19 volts takes only a matter of minutes.

...so it would seem that the power supply indeed serves it's purpose as designed. I'm calling it done

Just out of curiousity, where did you get your transformer? I can't believe how much the price has risen on them these days.

I got it from icamanufacturing.com (Fatboy). Their transformers are much better lately than was available there for a while. It was right around $120 shipped priority mail. Ordered it one day and had it two days later.

Update:

Today was the first time since I put this thing together that I had a chance to really put the whole shooting match though it's paces. We had great skip running up here for several hours and so I cranked up and went to town. Everything worked like a charm. I was on and off the key for a couple hours and the battery bank stayed up and so did my output watts. I never saw my voltage drop below 17.5 the whole time and my peak watts were hitting just over 3700 RMS.

Gotta love it!

Sounds like a keeper. Always good to know you've got reliable power on hand for when you need it.

Last time I had the SB-220 fired up, my dedicated 220V line seemed to be keeping the 500Z's fed well enough. Someday I'll have to upgrade to the "big" watts, though. Till then I'll slosh around in the Swamp with what I have and my "Big Iron" topside.

From the sounds of things, there were decent conditions today. Never had a chance to check it out, just too many other things that had to get done, and I was originally supposed to go to the PSU Blue/White game today. Last minute change of plans....
