I can't say anything on the RCI but I always got great reports from a MD-1 on my FT-102 and FT-757GX.

my buddy has a yaesu ft-890 with the MD-1c8 mic. it sounds great, and looks even better. i know his is wired 8 pin yaesu. maybe having your mic wired 4 pin is what is making it sound different? idk? i know before he got the md-1 he was using an 8 pin yaesu to 4 pin cobra adapter with a d-104 and it still sounded great. i'm stumped on this one?

check yer mic gain, try turning it way down. i had a 8 pin ham mic wired, and it sounded like shit, until i went to use my radio one day and unbeknownst to me my son had turned my mic gain way down and it sounded great.
